Abstract

Rapid progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has driven the emergence of applications that
support digital literacy, one being GlassWire, which offers both mobile data usage
monitoring and firewall functions on Android devices. Vocational high school (SMK)
students typically know AI only in its chatbot form and have had little hands-on exposure
to traffic monitoring or firewall-based access control. Through GlassWire training, this community service program sought to build up the network literacy of Computer and
Network Engineering (TKJ) and Building Design Engineering (TGB) students at SMK
Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta. Eighty-five grade X and XI students took part in the singleday
session, which opened with an initial assessment of prior knowledge, moved through
a material presentation and hands-on installation and configuration of GlassWire on each
student's own device with accompanying discussion, and closed with a final assessment of
practical outcomes. The instructor's initial assessment found that none of the students were
familiar with GlassWire in particular, though roughly a quarter already grasped the general
idea of mobile data monitoring and firewalls. By the closing assessment, every student
(100%) had completed the GlassWire installation with all features intact, and among a
randomly sampled group questioned afterward, about 90% could explain or show how to
use and configure the relevant features. The program's outputs include an online media
article and a national journal publication, intended as a simple model for strengthening
network literacy among vocational students.
