Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of the family’s role as the main socialization agent in shaping students’ learning motivation in higher education. Parenting styles are considered external factors that influence students’ learning motivation. This study aims to describe the influence of parenting styles on the learning motivation of students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The research informants consist of eight students selected purposively and representing four types of parenting styles, namely democratic, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and limited documentation. The results of the study show that parenting styles influence the formation of students’ learning motivation. Democratic parenting produces strong intrinsic motivation, authoritarian parenting forms extrinsic motivation, permissive parenting shows motivation that develops from self-awareness, and neglectful parenting shows compensatory motivation as an effort to prove oneself and seek recognition. Emotional support, family communication, control, and parental trust also influence students’ learning processes in undergoing their studies.
