Abstract

Final-year students of the Faculty of Economics and Business often experience career-related anxiety despite having good academic performance. This condition indicates that academic confidence alone is insufficient to explain students’ readiness to enter the workforce. This study aims to analyze the role of career adaptability in moderating the effect of academic self-efficacy on perceived employability among final-year students of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Negeri Medan. This study employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. A digital questionnaire was distributed to 190 eighth-semester students from five study programs. After data cleaning, 162 responses met the research criteria, resulting in a response rate of 85.3%. Measurements were conducted using Likert scales covering academic self-efficacy (8 items), career adaptability (12 items), and perceived employability (10 items). All items were declared valid, while Cronbach’s Alpha values ranged from 0.798 to 0.845. The data met the assumptions of normality, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity. The data were then analyzed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) through two stages of hierarchical regression. The results indicate that academic self-efficacy has a positive and significant effect on perceived employability (B = 0.398; p < 0.001), explaining 31.8% of the variance. After career adaptability and the interaction term were included, the coefficient of determination increased to 40.2%. The interaction between academic self-efficacy and career adaptability was also positive and significant (B = 0.193; p = 0.005). These findings indicate that the relationship between academic self-efficacy and perceived employability becomes stronger among students with higher levels of career adaptability. Therefore, the faculty career center should integrate career adaptability training with academic mentoring programs for final-year students.
